What Does a Brick Calculator Calculate?

A brickwork calculator helps estimate the volume of a wall and the approximate number of bricks required. Mortar quantity can then be estimated from the difference between the wall volume and the combined volume occupied by bricks, subject to the assumptions used by the calculator.

Inputs You Need

Typical inputs include wall length, wall height, wall thickness, brick length, brick width, brick height, mortar joint thickness and wastage. The current tool also provides a design-code selection and standard brick-size options.

Basic Brickwork Formula

Wall Volume = Length × Height × Wall Thickness. The approximate number of bricks depends on the brick size plus mortar-joint dimensions. A simplified planning relationship is Number of Bricks ≈ Wall Volume / Nominal Brick Module Volume, followed by an appropriate wastage allowance.

Worked Example

For a wall 10 m long, 3 m high and 230 mm thick, wall volume is 10 × 3 × 0.23 = 6.90 m³. The actual brick count depends on the selected brick dimensions and mortar joint. This is why entering the correct brick size and joint thickness matters.

Mortar Considerations

Mortar consumption changes with brick dimensions, joint thickness, workmanship and wall geometry. Openings for doors and windows should be deducted when estimating an actual building wall, rather than assuming a continuous rectangular wall.

Wastage

Some allowance is normally needed for breakage, cutting and handling. The appropriate percentage depends on site practice, material quality and project conditions. Avoid using a generic allowance as a substitute for project-specific measurement.
