Paint Calculator – Wall Area, Coats & Paint Quantity
Use the paint work calculator to perform a quick preliminary calculation from project dimensions and engineering assumptions. Review inputs and verify final results against project requirements.
Introduction
Estimate paintable wall or ceiling area and approximate paint quantity using surface dimensions, number of coats and coverage assumptions.
How Paint Quantity Is Estimated
Paintable area is measured from the surface dimensions after accounting for major openings where appropriate. Paint quantity is then estimated by dividing area × number of coats by the manufacturer's coverage rate.
Coverage Rate
Coverage varies by paint type, surface texture, primer, application method and manufacturer. The label coverage should be used for procurement whenever available.
Primer and Multiple Coats
Primer, putty and finish coats should be considered as separate materials where required. One coat does not always provide the same finish or coverage as a multi-coat system.
Worked Example
A 100 m² surface with two coats and a nominal coverage of 10 m²/L per coat requires approximately 20 L before practical adjustments. Actual consumption can be higher on porous or textured surfaces.
FAQs
Q: Should doors and windows be deducted? A: Significant openings can be deducted for a more accurate estimate.
Q: Does one litre always cover the same area? A: No. Coverage depends on product and surface.
