Labour & Man-Days Calculator – Construction Manpower Estimate
Use the labour & man-days calculator to perform a quick preliminary calculation from project dimensions and engineering assumptions. Review inputs and verify final results against project requirements.
Introduction
Estimate construction labour requirements by relating work quantity, productivity and available working time to skilled and unskilled manpower.
What Is a Man-Day?
A man-day represents the amount of work performed by one worker during a defined working day. Productivity varies by activity, site conditions, worker skill and project organization.
Basic Formula
Required Man-Days = Work Quantity ÷ Productivity per Worker per Day. Estimated Workers = Required Man-Days ÷ Available Duration, subject to practical crew constraints.
Productivity Matters
Masonry, plastering, reinforcement, shuttering and excavation all have different productivity rates. Weather, material availability, site access and supervision can change actual output.
Planning a Crew
Use activity-specific productivity rates and then check crew size, sequencing and dependencies. Adding workers does not always increase output linearly because work fronts may be limited.
FAQs
Q: Does the calculator know actual site productivity? A: No. Productivity is an input assumption.
Q: Can it create a complete labour schedule? A: It provides preliminary manpower estimates; a project schedule should include dependencies and resources.
Disclaimer
Use actual project productivity records whenever available and update the estimate during execution.
